Jacquie Garcia presents 'Beneath the Surface' a solo exhibition in the Little Space.
Beneath the Surface is a body of work that brings together ceramics and paintings to explore the emotional terrain that exists just below the surface of everyday life. Jacquie Garcia’s practice is rooted in intuition and process, drawing equally from the natural world and her internal responses to it.
Jacquie’s life is one of constant movement and shifting focus. This exhibition emerges from the quiet moments carved out of that rhythm—where making becomes a form of grounding, reflection, and resistance. The work speaks to the complexity of holding many roles at once and the emotional undercurrents that shape our experience of the world.
The ceramic forms in Beneath the Surface are thrown on the wheel and hand-carved, allowing texture and mark-making to become part of the storytelling. These pieces carry layered emotional weight, exploring themes of resilience, vulnerability, and transformation. Some reflect the presence of grief and memory, while others evoke a sense of renewal and the tension between strength and fragility.
Jacquie’s paintings sit in dialogue with her ceramics, drawing on the same environmental influences. But while the landscapes appear external, they are driven by an emotional response. The quiet awe of being immersed in nature, the fleeting clarity of solitude, and the feelings stirred by light, scent, and place.
Beneath the Surface invites viewers to slow down, to feel, and to consider the often unseen or unspoken forces that shape who we are and how we create.
